Tom and Cody's love for hunting. At the age of 31, I underwent a back surgery to correct a problem I had been dealing with from age 15. At the time of the surgery I had a 2 year old chocolate lab named Cody. He loved to hunt and I promised him if he helped me recover, I would take him to South Dakota to hunt pheasant every year. We went that fall with me in a back brace and every fall for the rest of his life. We even flew from Alaska to hunt pheasants in South Dakota. Ptarmigan hunting in Alaska with Cody, 1997. Pheasant Hunting for New Hunters
Over the past 45 years hunting pheasants I have learned a few things about the birds to help get more in my game bag. When they wake up from the night’s sleep they will walk from the roosting habitat to their feeding habitat (corn, beans, wheat, milo, sunflowers in farming areas). The distance from roosting to feed is less than ½ mile. They are usually done feeding around 10:00am and will move to loafing areas. This habitat is knee high cover with easy escape avenues. They will remain in this area until 4:00pm to 5:00pm and then move back to the feeding habitat. Once their crops are full, they will usually fly back to the night roosting habitat. Apple Cinnamon Pheasant
Looking for a tasty way to enjoy your Pheasant? Try on of our favorite recipes: Apple Cinnamon Pheasant 1 cup All Purpose Flour 1 Tbs Ground Cinnamon 1 tsp Seasoned Salt 1 tsp Ground Black Pepper 2 Red Cooking Apples, cored and cut into ½” wedges 1 Pheasant, fillet the breast and remove the thighs and legs from the carcass 2 to 4 Tbs Olive oil Combine flour, cinnamon, seasoned salt, and black pepper in a one gallon plastic zip lock bag. Mix well by shaking until ingredients are thoroughly blended. Add pheasant pieces and shake until pieces are completely coated with flour.
